Home Farm Attingham is run by the Dixon family, third generation tenant farmers since 1964. The farm was opened to the public in 1987 by Sam and Judy Dixon, who now farm in partnership with their eldest son Ben and wife Laura, together with our wider family.
The journey to Home Farm started in 1964 when Eric and Dorothy Dixon took on the National Trust farm tenancy, milking a small herd of Jersey cows, selling milk direct and supplying eggs from battery hens. The original parlour is still on display at the farm today. In 1985 their youngest son Sam and his wife Judy took over the running of the farm. After visiting many similar farms on family holidays with their three children Charlotte, Ben and Joe, they decided to diversify and opened the farm to the public in 1987. In 2008 after agricultural college, and travelling the world, Ben formally joined the family business. In 2011 a robotic milking machine for our herd of 100 dairy cows was installed.
In November 2021 we made the huge decision to sell our beloved dairy herd. A combination of poor milk price, rising costs and national Bovine TB restrictions meant we were faced with the difficult decision to cease milk production.
There are still cows on the farm, you will see our 200 head of beef cattle graze our organic pastures on the way in to Attingham Park. We also grow wheat, barley, fodder beet, root vegetables over 202 hectares of organic land as well as rearing the many animals you see on the farm.
Today, as with many other farming businesses across the UK which have needed to diversify to remain viable, our open farm is a major part of our farming operations.
Our ethos remains the same from when we first opened the farm to the public; to provide affordable family fun, the opportunity for children to access the countryside and learn where our food comes from whilst providing a safe and accessible space for all who visit us.
We look forward to seeing you on the farm very soon, and please ask us any questions about food and farming if you see us out and about!
Home Farm is situated on the Attingham Hall estate, just off the B4380 in Atcham, near Shrewsbury. The entrance to the farm is signposted off the main road.
We are open every day 10am until 5pm from Easter to October half term
